Advantages of Registering F1 Females

The Premier Commercial Female Program

Since its establishment in 1979, the ABBA F1 Certification Program has become the leading commercial female registration program in the U.S., with over 85,000 females registered. This program offers commercial producers a proven method to enhance herd performance and profitability, with Golden Certified and Certified F1 females averaging $200 more per head than other breed crosses.

F1 Certification Options

  • Golden Certified F1Progeny of two registered parents.
  • Certified F1Sired by a registered bull and out of a qualified purebred, non-registered cow inspected by an ABBA representative.

Producers can achieve a Brahman-influenced F1 hybrid by breeding registered Brahman bulls to qualified non-registered cows of other breeds or by crossing registered bulls of other breeds with registered or qualified Brahman cows. This flexibility ensures a 50/50 Brahman-Bos Taurus hybrid, known for superior adaptability, longevity, and performance.

What is Brahman Bucks?

The Brahman Bucks Program was created to highlight the exceptional F1 females, recognized as the industry standard for crossbred females within the commercial cow-calf sector—particularly in the Southern U.S.. These F1 females play a vital role not only in regional cattle production but also in the global commercial industry.

To celebrate their impact, numerous replacement female sales throughout the Gulf Coast Region showcase F1 females, reinforcing their value in commercial operations. The Brahman Bucks Program recognizes the Top 3 pens at selected commercial female sales across the region. Currently, eight sales spanning from Texas to Florida participate in this initiative.

Brahman Bucks Awards:

  • Top Pen: $300
  • 2nd Place Pen: $200
  • 3rd Place Pen: $100

At each participating sale, all F1 female pens are evaluated, and the Top 3 are selected by a dedicated member of the ABBA Marketing Committee or an ABBA representative. This program’s primary goal is to strengthen connections with commercial cattle producers while reinforcing the significance of Brahman genetics in the commercial sector.

We are excited about the continued growth of this initiative and its role in promoting the value of Brahman-influenced females in the marketplace.

Brahman Research Projects

Ongoing research across multiple universities is driving advancements in Brahman cattle genetics, fertility, and overall productivity. Studies are underway to identify key traits that impact efficiency, docility, and economic outcomes within the breed.

At Texas A&M University, researchers are examining the relationship between female reproductive efficiency and profitability (Herring), utilizing exit velocities as an objective measure of docility (Daigle), and identifying early fertility markers in Brahman bulls (Perry).

Beyond Texas, additional institutions are making significant contributions. At the University of Tennessee, Dr. Zoca is studying factors influencing bull fertility. The University of Florida is exploring genetic resistance to horn flies (Rezende), while researchers at the University of Missouri (A.J./Decker) are refining fertility phenotypes to improve reproductive efficiency.

In addition to these ongoing projects, researchers are also collaborating on emerging studies involving heterosis, genetic markers, and breed characterization. These include:

  • USMARC/Texas A&M Beeville – Heterosis studies and the Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) project.
  • University of Tennessee (Troy Rowan) – Investigating molecular heterosis and gene expressions.
  • University of Florida (Raluca Mateescu) – Updating the genetic tenderness panel, marbling markers, and fatty acid profiles of Brahman beef.
  • Texas A&M (Clare Gill) – Exploring genetic variation underlying horned and polled phenotypes.
  • USDA National Germplasm Bank – Characterizing and preserving Brahman genetic diversity.
  • University of Florida & Texas A&M – Developing and genetically characterizing early-fertility Brahman cattle.

These collaborative efforts continue to push the boundaries of Brahman research, ensuring the breed’s long-term success and sustainability in the cattle industry.
