ABBA International Field Day

The ABBA International Field Day was hosted by Alfredo & Josefina Muskus and family at their beautiful Santa Elena Ranch located in Madisonville, Texas on October 16, 2015. The pleasant sunny afternoon provided for a beautiful and comfortable venue under a white canvas tent where all the festivities took place. The venue was adorned with Sponsor tables promoting various agricultural products and businesses. The perimeters were surrounded with haystacks for those people wanting to sit and enjoy a bit of the beautiful sunshine. As guests arrived they were welcomed with refreshing natural juices, cocktails and a variety of tasty Venezuela delicatessens. Mr. Troy Thiboudeaux and Paul Canik of Louisiana added a nice twist with their famous and delicious “pistolettes”.
Executive Vice President of ABBA, Chris Shivers kicked off the event by giving a warm welcome. He recognized the Muskus family and their crew for their hard work in getting everything ready to host this event, he thanked the Sponsors, guests and international guests who traveled many miles to attend. Representatives from the following countries were present: Australia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela. The largest delegation present was led by President of AMCC, Mr. Jesus Quintanilla Casanova and his Directors of Mexico. Also in attendance was President of CRICEPA, Mr. Rodolfo Moreno of Panama. Texas Department of Agriculture Intl. Marketing Director, Jon Garza was present as well as representatives of Desarollo and The Brahman Journal breed publications.
ABBA President, J.D. Sartwelle, Jr. followed by addressing everyone and thanked the ABBA International Committee and ABBA staff for their work in organizing the field day. He recognized other special guests in attendance and thanked guests and ABBA membership for their support.
The program proceeded with feature speaker, Tony Clayton, President of Clayton Agri-Marketing, Inc. and former President of U.S. Livestock Exporters Association. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of USLGE. He gave a presentation on the importance of international livestock marketing, livestock exporting opportunities and emerging markets of the future. Mr. Clayton has vast experience in international marketing and trade, he leads one of the largest companies in the United States, focusing on live animal trade including beef and dairy cattle, goats, horses, sheep, swine and agricultural equipment, exporting to over 46 countries worldwide. He has vast experience in international marketing of animal genetics and agricultural products, both in the private and government sectors.
Mr. Clayton introduced, Dr. Antonio Ramirez–USDA/APHIS/VS/NIES–Senior Staff Veterinarian, Live Animal Exports: Western Hemisphere. Dr. Ramirez thanked the ABBA for their efforts and assistance in the promotion of U.S. genetics worldwide. He stressed the importance of keeping close working relationships with USDA/APHIS and committed to continue his work and efforts in reaching protocols with countries for live animal exports.
Armelinda Ibarra, ABBA Recording Secretary gave a special presentation to three individuals for their continued support and assistance in the promotion of the ABBA, the American Brahman breed and their tireless work in working together with ABBA on international marketing activities in many established markets and their assistance in emerging markets:
Dr. Jim Sanders – Professor and Section leader in the Animal Breeding & Genetics Section of the Dept. of Animal Science at Texas A&M Univ.
Dr. Joe Paschal – Livestock Specialist Texas at AgriLife Extension in Corpus Christi, TX
Dr. David Riley – Associate Professor Texas A&M / Animal Breeding & Genetics
The highlight of the day was the “FUN AUCTION” that took place after the awards and presentations. ABBA member, David Domsch served as the auctioneer with the assistance of J.D. Hudgins Scholarship recipient, James Kent of Australia. They auctioned a variety of items including an Appaloosa Filly, a donkey, dove hunt, Brahman semen and lots of other great fun items, collecting a total of $12,550. All proceeds to go towards international marketing activities, mainly for the purchase of International Show awards presented by ABBA to grand champions across the globe.
